Another thing....

I'm glad that Sony has finally gotten with the program and started offering trophies (similar to Xbox's achievments) but I do have a few gripes about it.

First of all, if they're going through and patching all the games released before trophies, could they at least make it so that what you've accomplished already is reflected in your trophies? I was 95% of the way through Fallout 3 when it got patched and as a result have had to replay it. Now you have to play through to Lvl 20 3 different ways to get all of the trophies, so I would have had to go through anyways, but I would have liked to have 1 way (with Good karma) to have counted towards my trophy count.

Secondly, why couldn't they assign points to trophy's like Xbox does? If I knew I could score free schwag by gaining trophies, I'd probably play more games. Obviously, I'd probably rent or buy used, but it's still good for Sony for business.

Thirdly I wish there was an easier way in-game to find out what trophies you need. Currently you have to hit the 'PS' button on the controller and use the XMB to navigate to trophies. I suppose I can't complain too much as you can at least ACCESS the XMB during a game, it used to be that you would have to exit out of the game and then look.

With the 2.53 update, Sony has reportedly put Flash 9 functionality into their browser. Nice Sony, way to keep up there ::rolling eyes::. I haven't tried it out yet, so I can't actually say if it works or not. Edit: I checked and yes it does work. wOOt! Of course I'm not holding my breath on when Flash 10 is added :)

I also have to try out Home for PS3. I got the beta testing invite, I've installed it, but haven't made my avatar yet or tried it out. Penny Arcade seems to think it's not a good thing. Oh well, I still have to try it out to see if it's worth my time. I'll probably give it a crack tonight....maybe...if I'm not too busy retriving trophies for Fallout 3 :) Edit: Still too busy with Fallout 3, I'll be testing it on the New Year's break.

^ Title is because I promised Pam I would do so :)

So it's been a very, very, very stressful holidays. 1st there was some static about us not getting any gifts for anyone, especially my brother and girlfriend who always get us something. Unfortunately we have to watch every penny right now because we have a lot of the no-interest credit deals coming through in the next month so we can't get anything. Not to mention, Christmas isn't really our bag. I'd much rather see my kids happy because of a $10 toy than obligate $10 because I feel guilty about receiving a present from someone. After much wailing and gnashing of teeth and threats to not go we got that smoothed out.

On top of that, for Xmas day we had Pam's parents coming over and we have 2 turkeys that we got for free for Thanksgiving, so I decided that I was going to smoke one. No big deal right? Wrong. On top of taking 4 days to thaw in the fridge, it's another day just to make the brine, another day to soak it in the brine, another day to let it sit out and let the brine do it's work then rub it down and smoke it for 6 hours. So as I had not pulled the turkey out until Sunday, I had to cut a few corners. First I thawed it for 2 days in the fridge and 8 hours on the counter (still in the wrapper). Then when I made up the brine I put it in a snowbank for an hour and put some fresh snow in it to lower the temp to 40 degrees. I then left it outside for only 8 hours and took it out and baked it for 30 mins to hopefully kill any surface bacteria that may have been growing. Naturally, I forgot to get charcoal so I had to get that at a very, very busy Walmart. I came home, started the fire, put the turkey in, and prayed that it would work. For the life of me, I couldn't get the smoker thermometer over 150 no matter how much wood I put on it. I have an indirect smoker so I was just hoping that the cold weather was just messing with the thermometer. My fears were unjustified because after about 5 1/2 hours the turkey was actually done. I had to put it in the fridge and reheat it on Xmas day but it turned out really really good. I can't wait to do the other one (correctly, this time).

Of course that wasn't the only thing I had to do. Pam was sick so I had to do a fair bit of the cleaning and stuff for the house. We then went over to my Aunt's house for our Xmas eve schindig. It went pretty well, everyone was their best behavior, and my dad rented a Santa suit and showed up as Santa Claus. He did a really good job and he should think about doing it as a part time career :) Think about it, you sit all day and then just have to deal with kids, most of whom are in awe of you.

The kids got a ton of presents from a Black and Decker playset with more tools than I have, Barbie stuff, Spiderman (Laney loves him, don't ask why), a keyboard and a Hannah Montana guitar to drive us nuts. My little nephew Keegan got a drum set so at least I know Brandon and Sam are going through the same stuff as we are. Pam and I got $400 but only $250 was in cash and that's paying off our Menard's card. As an aside, can we abolish gift cards and stuff? I appreciate the money, but I can't pay my bills with a gift card and that's what MY Xmas wish is. Furthermore, you have to pay $3-5 to get the card, so essentially you'd save a few bucks just by giving cash. Of course if I say anything to the person who gave us the card, then I'd be "ungrateful" and such even though I have a valid and logical point. On top of that, I can't use it at Aldi's because they only accept debit cards and not Visa/MC.

Anyways, we finally got the kids home and we got to sit for a few minutes. Xmas day the kids got up and were being surprisingly patient waiting for Nana and Papa (they couldn't open presents until they got there). Pam and I were bustling around to get everything ready so that was appreciated. From "Santa" the kids got a skateboard, a bowling set, a new laptop with bag for Genna and a laptop like attachment for the computer for Laney and then a bike that attaches to the TV and you can pedal it to move you're character forward and collect letters and numbers on the track. It's pretty sweet, I even tried it out :)

So anyways, Xmas is now over and there is no more holiday stress which makes me a happy camper. Now we just have to figure out what the hell we're going to do with all these freakin toys! :)

The Knights who say NIN are still here

According to Trent Reznor on NIN.com:
"The LIGHTS IN THE SKY era has come to a close, and I'd like to once again thank
you for your support. I am very proud of what we pulled off - it was an immense
amount of work and worth it all.I'd like to thank Josh and Alessandro for being
an integral part of this for the last few years and I wish them all the best.No
rest for the wicked here, though. We start rehearsing the new band/format first
thing next year and as I mentioned, we'll be announcing some final waves of
dates. North America, UK/Europe, Pacific Rim and elsewhere.Oh yeah - we may have a small holiday gift for you soon. Check back."

So that seems to be a good thing, it sounds like they will be doing some more touring. Of course, there's still been no announcement as to the future of NIN, but I've heard some rumors regarding Trent Reznor's last post as hints that they will be breaking up. I personally don't believe that he would as essentially he's a 1 man band and he would get the urge to create music eventually.

No matter what, the main point it that I got to see them in Cleveland AND Grand Rapids and most of you didn't! :-P So yay me! I do hope that if he does go touring again that he comes back to Wisconsin!

Hack the planet, errr your life I mean

Finally, I can make a technology post without bitching about my life :)

I've recently been introduced to the blog Lifehacker (http://www.lifehacker.com/). It's been around for a while, but I'm almost always the last to find out about anything cool. They usually feature some really nice freeware that you can use to better organize your life and computer, in addition to practical tips (such as physical ways to organize your desk better). They've made me aware of a few decent productivity sites.
One of them that I'm definitely liking is Remember the Milk (http://www.rememberthemilk.com/). Essentially it's an online task manager that you can use for free to create tasks, group them together, assign due dates, tag them, and even pin them on a map so you can group them by location. I'm using it to get a head start on 2009's resolution to be more organized.

So far it's working out pretty good. I've used it to plan out finishing the bathroom, as well as other stuff that I want to do (games to finish, books to read, etc) as well as any projects that I might have for work. If you want to get organized with tasks and don't want it tied to just one computer like on a standalone mail app (outlook, etc.), I recommend this site.

Evernote (www.evernote.com) is supposed to be another good site as far as organizing notes but I haven't tried it yet (mainly because it's a blocked site at work). The cool thing about that is that you can take a picture (even from your cell phone) and then upload it or text it to the site. It then saves the picture and you can search the text in there or convert it to words.

Jott (www.jott.com) is another interesting site. How it works is that you sign up and link your cell phone to your account. You can then call their number and use voice activation to leave a voice note for yourself on the website or you can use it to vocally post to Twitter, Facebook, Blogger, etc. The free version will only allow for 15 second messages that are only for your own use (that is, you can't send them or text to anyone else). The paid version allows you to send outbound texts from your voice among allowing you to interact with Remember the Milk and a bunch of other sites. The only downfall of the free version is that (as of yet) I have not figured out how to RETRIEVE your notes on the go in audio. You can set up a text reminder, but if your message is more than 160 characters when transcribed you won't get the text. Plans start at $4/month or $40/year, but I don't quite see enough value in it to justify it. I mean if I can set my notes while not at a computer, I want to be able to get to them as well. That's on top of the fact that I don't have much for spare cash at this point in the year.

I'm actually kind of working on being a completely legit software user in the next year. By legit I mean all legally purchased or GPL licensed software. I don't know if I'll really be able to pull that off as I use a few important pieces of software that I haven't found an adequate replacement for. Yeah, I know I'm naughty. I'm a naughty ninja pirate robot monkey vampire god!

By the power of Briggs & Stratton

I got a new snowblower over my lunch break. It's 27" of clearing width with a 230cc 11.5 ft-lb of torque monster engine! I was going to wait until I got home but with the foot of snow coming, they were selling like mad. I scored that last one in the store for the model I wanted. So it's now official, no iPhone for me :( Maybe if I get the old one fixed and sell it for $300 I can talk Pam back into it. For now, at least I don't have to shovel. wOOt!

It's snowing hard and Canada's to blame. You give winter a bad name (bad name)

Ok, so awful Bon Jovi puns aside, we got another 4.5 inches dumped on us last night. There's another 10-13 inches forcast for Thursday and the snowblower has officially crapped out on us (I think the shear pin snapped again). It's still under warranty, but if I send it in to be fixed now, we'll still be without a snowblower when the heavy shit comes. Not to mention that it's the 2nd time in less than a year that it's broke so I don't think the problem is heavy snow, it's just a shitty snowblower :(

Now I've got to head out and try to find one for about $900 that's decent. I'm hoping that shouldn't be too hard, but I haven't really looked in a while. I will say this, I will never, ever, buy another YTD product again. My snowblower and 1st lawn mower were both Yard Machines products and both broke after 10-15 uses. Obviously it's not maintainance related (even through I do keep up with the maintainance)

The shitty thing is now that we won't have enough money for me to get an iPhone (or anything remotely resembling it) in March when our Verizon contract expires. I don't know why I'm so caught on it but I just like being able to access all the sites that I use from anywhere with EDGE/3G coverage. BUT NOOOOOOOOOOO! I have to have bullshit life stuff happen and then I get fucked in the ass when it comes to shit I want! *sigh* Oh well, at least this means I don't even have to think about a phone, I'll just get whatver is free from Sprint.

Speaking of free, I'm trying out Vista 64 bit Ultimate on my computer to see if the 64 bit stuff will work faster. I'm not really rocking the greatest system ever, but it's more than enough to handle the Aero interface (1.9 Ghz Athlon X2, 4 GB DDR2 800 RAM, Nvidia GeForce 9500 GT w/ 1GB DDR3 RAM). However 3D mark still says my computer is below middle of the pack (The CPU is holding me back).

As far as the interface, there's somethings to get used to but so far I like it. Of course I will be tweaking it with Rocketdock (www.rocketdock.com) and Samurize (www.samurize.com). I have these two running on my Windows XP setup and it looks sweet. However, Pam doesn't like it (big shock there) because it's different. So I guess I'll just have to put a new profile on the computer just for her and she can hang out with her Windows 98 lookalike setup while I'm zooming on to the future! :)

I may not become a Vista fanboi, but I'm hoping that when it comes time to processing videos and stuff, that I can rely on it for being faster than XP. Of course I'll have to test and now that I'm done with the bathroom I have time for it. So essentially, when I know, so will you my non-existant reader base :)

A Clusterfuck of Epic Proportions

So for the last week and a half, I've been reflooring the bathroom. It's been one non stop thing after another. To start, the main reason I was doing it was because somehow the seal at the base of the toilet was leaking and it had to be pulled out anyways. Additionally, I have children who like to splash in the tub so my weak ass vinyl flooring just wasn't cutting it. I have put vinyl flooring in there twice now, so it was now time to move up to ceramic tile.

Ok, so that's great right? Ceramic's relatively easy to install. However, because the cheap ass former owners cheaped out on their bathroom remodel in the 80's the subfloor was a vinyl sheet over 1/4" plywood over 1/4" fiberboard over the vinyl sheet from the 50's/60's over the original floor. Let me say that that is not an effective water barrier because there was super mold from where the wood soaked up all the water from the toilet....gross. Pulling out all that shit sucked ass as well because it was nailed down every 3" (the floor is uneven) and then I had renail the 50's linoleum down because there's nothing but glue holding it in place. On top of that the original subfloor doesn't go all the way to the wall, so I had to fill that with foam sealant.

For a new subfloor I went with 1/2" cement board (I probably should have gone with 1/4", but Menard's didn't have it). It's fairly straightforward to install, you lay down a layer of mortar so that there's no gaps under the cement board and then nail it down about every 6 to 8". It is a pain in the ass to cut out though. It is cement after all, I had to resort to using a knife to mark where I wanted it cut and then hammer the shit out of it to break up the concrete so I could cut out the other side.

Ok, so far so good. The tile isn't too bad to put in, except I got a little crooked in laying it, resulting in 1 row of tiles being a little offset from the rest. My major gripe was that I was cheap and didn't buy a tile saw and had to use a hand tile cutter for straight lines and tile nippers to carve out all the odd shapes. Tile nippers are a bitch to work with. I snapped 4 or 5 tiles before I got the hang of it.

So, woot, woot it's all going smoothly....or is it? Here's where the fun begins. When trying to set the toilet I used a non wax flange. It's essentially a piece of rubber that is glued to the bottom of the toilet and it provides the seal. Well, first of all I got the wrong one. Secondly, my toilet bolts were now too short because the tile added about a 1/2" to the floor height (and one was broken). So I go out, get new bolts and a new flange and the bolts are STILL too short to really get the toilet tight and the flange is going in tight. Anyways because I wanted to have a toilet, I put it in and tightened it as best as I could. Lo and behold, it leaks. It turns out that the cast iron pipe from the 1900's isn't quite 4" in diameter ::facepalm::

I go back to the store, get longer bolts, and a wax ring. I install the toilet and notice that the fucking tank connection is leaking again because the putty I put in there moved. Luckily I actually had another tank (Pam accidentally dropped the lid and it shattered and buying a new tank is easier than trying to find a replacement lid), so I installed the new tank, install the new bolts put the wax ring on, tighten everything and voila, success!!!! But wait, why is there still water on the floor? Apparently I put a chip in the porcelain where the water from the tank drains into the bowl and water is leaking out of that. I sure as fuck am not going to take out the bowl again so I went back to the store and got some marine epoxy which worked. WOOHOO! I haz a toilet.

Now it's time for the sink. OH FUCK! Now I have to raise all the brackets by 1/2" :'-( . In the process of taking the sink off, I broke the plastic drain assembly. I had to go back to the store and buy a new one. After putting it together, lo and behold it works! So at this point all I need to do is seal the grout and put a transition piece in the doorway and I is done.

I like being able to be Mr. DIY, but sometimes I wish I had the money to hire a pro. This was one of those times :) Pictures will be included tonight when I get home.

Whatup?!

So anways, because I'm tired of all the crap from MySpace (which I was really only using for blogging anyways) I've set up an account here at Blogger. One of the big advantages is that I can get here from work so during my downtime I can actually write vs. trying to do it at home when I'm either too distracted or too exhausted. Yes, it's a gross misuse of time and equipment, but fuck 'em. I take more calls here than anyone and work on more hardware, so I think I'm being busy enough. Anyways, it's almost quitting time here. I will be sure to visit soon.
